Presented by the Museum School
June 21, 2006—The Museum School/Escuela del Museo has announced the date for its fourth-annual Empty Bowls fundraiser. Students at the Museum School are selling one-of-a-kind handmade clay bowls to help stop world hunger on Thursday, June 29, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Downtown Johnny Brown’s, 1220 Third Avenue, San Diego.
The handmade clay bowls, served with a warm meal inside, are being sold for $12. Proceeds will be given to the UNICEF emergency assistance areas to fight world hunger.
Downtown Johnny Brown’s donates food and services each year for this cause. Dine with other supporters that evening and take your bowl home as a reminder that you made a difference in the fight to stop world hunger.
The Museum School began working on the Empty Bowls project in the fall of 2002 as an exploration of its community service department, which focuses on service learning and gets the children involved in activities to benefit the community. This year, in addition to the Empty Bowls project, students raised money to help victims of the tsunami in Southeast Asia, organized a canned-food drive for local shelters, and engaged in art and recreational activities with senior citizens at St. Paul’s Manor. As a result, the students learned about a variety of ways they can contribute to their community, share their talents and energy with others in the neighborhood, and raise awareness of important issues, such as world hunger. Each student has made at least two bowls and has graciously donated their artwork for the Empty Bowls fundraiser. All bowls are handmade by children and fired with lead-free glazes.
