San Diego's Youngest Artists Receive Summer Scholarship Awards
California State Summer School for the Arts

May 27, 2003—The Children’s Museum San Diego hosts the 2003 California Arts Scholars Awards Reception. In observation of “California Arts Scholars Day” the Children’s Museum San Diego and civic leaders will host a ceremony honoring local gifted high school age artists. Each of the 20 young artists will receive a scholarship to InnerSpark 2003, an intensive summer arts education program, held annually on the campus of the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia.

InnerSpark offers a head start to talented teenagers who wish to pursue careers in the arts and entertainment industry. Statewide, only 650 of the 1,400 applicants make it into the school last year. Now celebrating its seventeenth year of discovering and nurturing young talent, InnerSpark has already helped almost 8,000 students with its rigorous pre-professional training programs in dance, animation, creative writing, visual art, music, film and video, and theater.

Planned attendees to the San Diego event include Margaret Radnick on behalf of Council member Michael Zucchet, Maryann Kempczenski on behalf of Council member Donna Frye, Aaron Pottichen on behalf of State Assemblyman George Plescia and Union Bank Representative Nota McInnes.

The event is made possible by a generous grant from Union Bank of California.

About the Children’s Museum/Museo de los Niños San Diego

Learning through the arts is the mission of the Children’s Museum San Diego. By facilitating active participation in learning, the Museum provides a place for creative experience, exploration and discovery. In fact, nationally acclaimed and professional local artists form the foundation of Museum exhibits and programs. And, through its partnerships and its own Museum School, it offers traditional and progressive education with a hands-on approach to applied learning. The Museum is currently under redevelopment.
