Children's Museum San Diego Rolls Out New Hands-on Art Activity in Vintage 1964 VW Bus

January 11, 2005

Who

Children’s Museum/Museo de los Niños San Diego

What

A vintage 1964 VW bus, transformed from a fish taco stand to a mobile hands-on arts activity for children. Created by the Museum’s internationally celebrated artist Alberto Caro, the bus houses the Culinary Culture Carts, an innovative art experience that allows kids to simulate a kitchen/restaurant environment. Using scented clay, garlic presses, tortilla makers, ink and other fun materials, kids create “food” art while learning about cultural diversity and using their imagination.

When

Saturday, January 15; 11am–5pm

Where

Multicultural Festival Children’s Area at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Promenade (Near Third and K Streets, across from the Convention Center) Why
Part of the Children’s Museum San Diego’s Museum Without Walls community outreach program, the Culinary Culture Carts enable children to discover the richness of cultural diversity by exploring their culinary culture. By sitting down at a table in a group as if they were in a family kitchen or restaurant setting, children share, celebrate rituals of cooking and eating, and learn about different backgrounds. As an art activity “to-go,” the Culinary Culture Carts travel throughout the San Diego area, reaching thousands of youngsters. This also keeps the Museum visible in the community while its new building is being constructed. (The Museum grand opening is projected for early 2008.)
